from The Cinnamon Stick
    by Letta Meinen
The book THE CINNAMON STICK begins with Part #1 IN THE BEGINNING with reference to cinnamon mentioned in the Bible times.  The Arabs were the first to bring this spice to the markets on the Mediterranean shores.  The first chapter in Part #1 is called The Rise of a Rage.  The rage was how the royalty and religious leaders had the wealth to purchase these valuable spices.  The Arabs had control of the trade for over 1000 years.
In the third chapter of Part #1 called Caravans and the Spice Route.  This chapter explains how the caravans were organized, who all was involved and how long it took them to make the trip from southern Arabia to the shores of the Mediterranean.  The Arabs were shrewd business men and kept their supply of spices secret for many years.  They told ferocious stories as winged birds, wild beasts to keep others from finding their supply
Part #2 of The Cinnamon Stick Waterways and Warfare deals with Spices and the waterways.  Traders began sailing to India and the far East looking for future trading sites.  Long voyages  were extremely dangerous but merchants and seaman were willing to take the risk for the riches it brought back to their country.  The greed of the royalty and kingdoms caused the downfall of many.  The devastations of European countries were followed by the Black Plague followed by the Crusades.  The stories of many such as Marco Polo and Columbus all tell of searches of spices and the riches it brings.
The Part #3 we find the exploration of the world with how the world countries were discovered in search of the spice trade.  It seemed where ever rich ships sailed there were stories of the many Pirates who preyed on the ships loaded with these riches from the Far East.  The pirates were so successful that  the countries they preyed upon tried to beat them at their own game and failed.  Even America profited from these spoils, the Colonist bought from the pirates while they were still under the control of Great Britain.
America enters the Spice trade in Part #4 with many adventures of seaman along the East Coast.  A little town of Salem, Massachusetts was the center of the trade of spices.  There are many tales of how the country was developed and trading that took place.  This section tells of the history of the Spice Companies in America that are still in operation today.  You will find answers to Cassia and Cinnamon and what is available in our markets today.
